new goal

Sub 3-hour marathon? Sub 10-hour ironman? Can a man be a man with no goals? Can a shan be a shan with no goals? Certainly she couldn't be an eagleshan.

This month I have two events related to the annual Bike to Work Day. That's two goals. 1.) beat north little rock mayor pat hayes to the river market (he's in a car, i'm on my bike); and 2) get a good contingent of CTEHers to support bike to work day may 16.

But I'm thinking REAL goals. Real big goals. Dreams, you might call them. What would be the ideal, if your life were ideal? Now, I really think we should all think hard about this. Here are some guidelines:

Take stock: what have you accomplished? What does that say of your potential?
Be realistic: we actually want to reach these goals, so consider you have to live a real life, work, travel, illness, etc.
Long term: Think in the 1-2 year time frame. Think of a goal that will keep you motivated and active for a long time. I know we all have short-term goals...think of this as setting the bar one notch higher, so you can achieve some true improvement.
Identity: make it something that you'll begin to define yourself by. This is what helped me towards Boston... For example, on all my training runs, no matter what the distance, I was measuring up my pace to the pace I knew I had to run to qualify. What pace am I watching now? How do I measure my acheivements now? We'll make the profiles on this site associated with your goal (e.g., "Bald-til-Boston" Beeler: just as with our faith, he carries around this mark, keeping him focused on what he has hanging out there as a goal...I love it!).

"For where there is no vision for the future, the people cast off restraint..."

Remember that Boston 2008 was a long-term goal. Honestly, if I hadn't laid it out there for all to see, it wouldn't have been such a burden that I HAD to reach. It just would have been on some wish list that never came to reality...

Much love to all, and prayers for happy, healthy, productive training going forward!

April 7, 8, 9, 14-21, 28-30

April 7-9: ran 6, 6, 5; biked 9, 20, 9
April 14-21: biked 9, 20, 20, 9, walked 5, 8, 10, ran 26.2
April 28-30: swam 200 (grammy's endless pool), biked 9, 20.

more on that 26.2: 3:20:56.

5k paces tell the story:

1st 5k: 7:23/mile pace
2nd: 7:23
3rd: 7:13
4th: 7:11
5th: 7:07
6th: 7:40
7th: 8:05
8th: 8:45
final 2k: 10:03/mile pace

the classic Hamlin fade, coupled with the hills at about 30k contributed to a gradual slowing of the pace.

But I enjoyed it. Had a nice bag of IV fluid after the race. What a great recovery plan. I wasn't that bad off, but rather than fight the nausea and exhaustion, I went ahead and got one. I was a new man 10 minutes later. It's a lovely plan...

now what? biking cinco de mayo in 2nd annual commuter challenge to highlight benefits of biking to work!

Re: May 2008

My goals are on the modest side...I've reached that point. I want to run a 3:20 marathon and then basically hold there for as long as possible. Right now, 3:20 would give me a 10 minute qualifying cushion. In a couple years, it would give me a 20 minute cushion. I suppose the more depressing way to state my goal is to stay the same while most people my age slow down.

Re: May 2008

Amen about posting the goals and workouts. Days that I feel like going home to the bed and the snuggling cats I say, "You already posted the mileage. You HAVE to do it." And then I do, although sometimes begrudgingly. Good luck vs. the mayor, D. And yours and Casey's goals seem realistically lofty. After EagleMan I have my sights set on some 5&10Ks, Rock'n'Roll 1/2, and Richmond 1/2 (so glad this is back!!!) "Obsessive is just a word the lazy use to describe the dedicated." Keyword: journeymen

May 2,5,6

May 2, biked to work 8 miles
May 5, raced mayor to downtown, 8 miles. I lost by 2 minutes in the Man v. Machine event; ironically due to stoplights downtown. it was a rule of the event that i had to obey all traffic laws, so i sat at those two stinking stoplights for about 2.5 minutes.
Biked home and set new PR at 22.5 mph, 21:30 total time.
May 6, biked to work, then to airport to pick up The Saturn, which was left there by G&G as they left us after a lovely weekend.

good goals, fine people. I have set mine: qualify for Hawaii Ironman 2009. I will probably try to do this at IM Couer d'Alene, in Idaho, on our way to GLCBS 2009. I may have to choose some other race. But there's the goal. Training starts now.

much love to all!!!

May 7-9

biked 16, 20, who knows - i'm feeling the need for a 20-miler. i was deposed in a lawsuit today as an expert witness. i get so deeply dedicated to my work in each case that it takes a lot out of me, and leaves me needing a release. lots o' concentration and work...aargh. 2 cold beers have helped.

goals

it is funny how weight comes off? I am down ten pounds from about 6 weeks ago and feeling pretty good. The running group in town helps tremendously. I am in limbo with them, not in the front group, what I call the road warriors, and I am not in the middle pack with the recreation guys. I ran with the road warrios for about two miles and then dropped. Anyway, I am a lot closer to the road warriors than the rec pack, I did hammer a road warrior last night and made him walk!!!!!!!! One guy feel from the pack with me, and I drove him in the ground after a big hill, he started to walk, what a wuss, after I peaked the hill, I hammered it home and dropped him. yesssss
